PHNOM PENH, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Flash floods have claimed nine lives and affected about 5,300 families in Cambodia since last week, a disaster control spokesman said Friday.
Keo Vy, chief of the Cabinet of the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM), said five of the dead were children.
"We'd like to appeal to parents to take care of their small kids during the flooding season in order to prevent them from drowning," he told Xinhua over telephone.
Four provinces being hit by floods are Banteay Meanchey, Preah Vihear, Kampong Thom, and Kratie.
"Some 5,300 families have affected from the floods and about 450 families have been evacuated to higher grounds," he said, adding that 8,500 hectares of rice paddy were inundated.
Floods usually hit Cambodia between August and October. In 2011, the country was hit the worst from floods, killing up to 250 people, according to the NCDM.
Last year, the floods killed only 14 people.
