PHNOM PENH, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's Ministry of Defense confirmed on Tuesday that it has postponed military programs with the United States in order to follow the government's policy and current situation.
"We postponed some programs with the United States only, not suspended or canceled, because our possibility and resources are limited, so we need more time to prepare ourselves for the cooperation," Lt. Gen. Nem Sowath, director general of the Defense Ministry's Policy and Foreign Affairs Department, said in a press briefing. "It is normal that either side asks to postpone military cooperation programs."
He said besides the United States, the military cooperation between Cambodia and other international partners was still actively underway as schedule to increase Cambodian army's capacity in national defense.
The confirmation came after the U.S. Department of State said Monday that Cambodian Ministry of Defense has postponed military program cooperation with the United States after the country's elections last month.
"Following the elections, the Cambodian Ministry of Defense postponed or canceled a number of international military programs, including with the United States," Marie Harf, deputy spokeswoman for the U.S. Department of State, said in a daily press briefing in Washington.
She said the United States would not categorize the cancelation of programs as a suspension of military ties.
