PHNOM PENH, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Tuesday decided to grant bail to four people who were arrested last week on the charge of inciting armed forces to topple the government, a court official said.
"The court decided to release them on bail," Meas Chanpisith, deputy prosecutor of the court, told reporters after the court's decision, adding that the suspects have promised not to commit any offences in the future.
Am Sam Ath, a senior investigator for the rights group Licadho, which provides lawyers to the four suspects, said the release-on- bail came after the families of the accused people and their lawyers requested to the court on Monday.
Police arrested the four people on Thursday last week while they planned to hand out 1,000 roses and inciting leaflets to soldiers and police who were deployed around Phnom Penh amid rising tension between the ruling party and the opposition party over disputed election results.
A National Police's statement, issued on Saturday last week, said the four suspects including two females were arrested for producing and distributing hundreds of leaflets, with an aim of inciting weapon violence to topple the government.
Subsequently, the Phnom Penh Municipal Court charged them with incitement to commit a felony, which could face up to two years in jail.
Cambodia's political tension has been on the rise since the National Election Committee released the initial results of the July 28 election on Monday last week, showing the ruling Cambodian People's Party of long-serving Prime Minister Hun Sen won a majority of vote, but the Cambodia National Rescue Party of longtime opposition leader Sam Rainsy rejected the results, claiming serious irregularities during the poll.
Soldiers and police with armored vehicles have been deployed around Phnom Penh after the opposition repeatedly threatened to call mass protests against the election results.
