PHNOM PENH, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian Minister of Social Affairs Ith Samheng on Tuesday called for trade unions and employers to ignore rumors that there would be post-election mass protest or even war.
"In recent days, there have been rumors about unrest, mass protest or even war, which have caused worries among garment workers, trade unions and garment manufacturers," he said in a statement.
"The government has taken firm measures to maintain security and public order,"he said.
He said the spread of rumors for threatening and intimidating purposes was illegal and wrong-doers, if found, would face legal punishment.
"I urge all garment workers, trade unions, and employers at all factories and enterprises to work as usual and not to believe those rumors spread by unscrupulous people," the minister said.
However, addressing a rally of about 3,000 supporters on Tuesday in Phnom Penh, Sam Rainsy, leader of the main opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), repeatedly called for mass protests against the July 28 election results.
"We urge all people to protect our victory," he said, claiming that his party won the poll, not the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) of long-serving Prime Minister Hun Sen.
The initial results, released by the government spokesman Khieu Kanharith, showed that the CPP won 68 of the 123 parliamentary seats, with the CNRP taking the remaining 55 seats.
Garment industry, the kingdom's largest foreign exchange earner, comprises about 500 factories with some 510,600 workers. The garment export turnover reached 2.5 billion U.S. dollars in the first six months of this year, said the Ministry of Commerce.
