Cambodia's election council to release initial poll results

PHNOM PENH, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's National Election Committee (NEC) will release the preliminary election results on Monday after a two-day postponement for irregularity investigation, the committee said on Sunday.
"The NEC would like to inform the public that the temporary election results will be released on Aug. 12 at 9:00 a.m. (local time) via the state-owned National Television of Cambodia and the national radios," the committee said in a statement.
The NEC said it has completed its probe into alleged poll irregularities after the general election on July 28.
Some political parties, local authorities and citizens claimed irregularities during the election, which include campaigning on the election day, disruptions to voting and vote counting, indelible ink easily washed off within hours after being applied, prevention and intimidation to voters, vote buying, and disruptions to election officials.
"According to NEC's investigation and verification, those irregularities could happen and disrupt as well as influence voters, voting, and vote counting at any level, but there is no serious impact," NEC's chairman Im Suosdey said in a conclusion report on poll irregularity investigation.
"The NEC sees these irregularities as an important and valuable document for research and as lessons for the improvement in the next elections," he said.
Initial unofficial results showed that the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) of long-serving Prime Minister Hun Sen won 68 of the 123 parliamentary seats, with the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) taking the remaining 55 seats.
But Sam Rainsy, CNRP's President, rejected the results, claiming serious irregularities during the poll, and called for the establishment of an independent poll probe committee or he would lead nationwide protests.
As of Sunday, the proposed independent committee, which is seen as the only body to peacefully resolve the dispute between the two parties over the poll results, has not been set up yet due to disagreement over committee members.
Sam Rainsy on Sunday once again threatened to call mass protests against the results if an independent committee still could not be formed to look into the alleged irregularities.
"I will return to Cambodia very soon. We will hold massive demonstrations to demand for the change of the current leaders if a joint poll probe technical group is still controversial and cannot find justice for the people," he wrote on his Facebook page from Massachusetts, the United States where he was attending his daughter's wedding.
Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sar Kheng said Friday that soldiers and armored vehicles have been deployed on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, since Thursday to ensure security and stability after Sam Rainsy has repeatedly called for mass protests against the results.
If the result of the July 28 election holds, Prime Minister Hun Sen, 61, who has been in power for 28 years, will be able to rule the country for another 5 years.
