PHNOM PENH, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) -- Senior officials of the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) and the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) met Friday to discuss issues concerning the formation of a joint committee to investigate into alleged irregularities in the July 28 national election.
In the first meeting between the two parties after the election, the CPP was led by senior lawmaker Cheam Yeap and the CNRP headed by former lawmaker Son Chhay.
"After a two-hour talk, we agreed to examine possibilities to select non-governmental organizations that have expertise and experience in elections to work in a technical team, with representatives from the United Nations and national and international organizations as observers," said a statement from the CNRP's cabinet.
Initial results showed that the CPP of long-serving Prime Minister Hun Sen won 68 of the 123 parliamentary seats, with the CNRP of recently-pardoned leader Sam Rainsy taking the remaining 55 seats.
Hun Sen, 61, who has been in power for 28 years, will rule the country for another five years through the poll victory.
But Sam Rainsy rejected the results, claiming serious irregularities, and called for the establishment of a joint investigation committee.
The National Election Committee (NEC) appealed on Friday to the CPP and the CNRP to attend a meeting with NEC in order to decide on the establishment of a joint poll probe committee.
If formed, the committee could comprise the NEC, the CPP and CNRP as members, and national, international or UN officials as observers.
Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sar Kheng said Friday that there would not be any barrier to the formation of the committee.
"We want to accelerate the talks towards a peaceful solution as soon as possible in order to enable our people to live in peace and happiness," he told reporters.
Sar Kheng said that all sides are willing to sort out all problems peacefully following an appeal from King Norodom Sihamoni on Wednesday.
"For the interest of our country and people, and to maintain national peace and stability, I'd like to appeal to the two political parties to continue to discuss with each other in order to find a peaceful solution to the conflict or remaining issues," the king said in a royal message.
According to the NEC, the election results will be officially released between Aug. 14 and Sept. 8.
