Most Cambodian high-profile officials declared asset already: anti-graft chief

PHNOM PENH, May 11 (Xinhua)—Almost all of the Cambodian senior officials have declared their assets to the Kingdom’s Anti-Corruption Unit, said the unit’s chief Om Yinteang on Wednesday.

The unit has announced to 24,837 high-profile officials in the state’s 37 institutions to declare their assets from January to April 7. Among the asset declarers are the president of the senate Chea Sim, the president of the national assembly Heng Samrin and the prime minister Hun Sen.

“By the deadline, up to 99 percent of them has declared their assets at the unit and the remaining 370 officials have explained their acceptable reasons for their postponement,” Yinteang said during the inauguration of the two-storey building of the Anti-Corruption Unit on Norodom Boulevard.

“It’s a proud result for the unit,” he said. “It reflected that Cambodian officials are willing to comply with the law and join with us in combating corruption.”

Meanwhile, deputy prime minister Sok An, minister of the cabinet ministers, said during the building inauguration that corruption is a joint concern for all and it hinders the government’s efforts in developing the economy and poverty alleviation.

“The government is firmly committed to root out all forms of corruptions and at all levels in the country for the sustainable economic development and poverty reduction,” he said.
Cambodia’s anti-corruption law was promulgated on April 17, 2010, any official found guilty of taking bribes faces up to 15 years in prison.
