Cambodia to host AFC President’s Cup for 1st time next week


PHNOM PENH, May 14 (Xinhua)--Cambodia will host six matches in Group A of the qualifying round of the 2011 Asian Football Confederation President’s Cup next week, said an official at  Cambodian Football Federation (CFF) on Saturday.

“This is the first time Cambodia host the tournament of AFC President’s Cup,” Khieu Sameth, CFF’s vice president, said during the press conference. “The host of such international event reflects the progress in football sector in Cambodia.”

The competition of qualification group A of the President’s Cup will kick off on May 21-25 at the capital’s Olympic Stadium.

The group A with four football squads including Cambodia’s Phnom Penh Crown, Kyrgyzstan’s Neftchi, Bangladesh’s Abahani, and Sri Lanka’s Don Bosco.
The 2011 AFC President’s Cup is divided into 3 qualification groups (A, B, C) with 12 leading football squads from 11 countries and a region.
Each of the 12 squads is from Nepal, Bhutan, Malaysia, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Palestinian Authority, and Taiwan region.
The competitions in groups B and C have been hosted by Myanmar and Nepal respectively.
The group winners and the best runner up would then qualify for the final stage, which would be hosted in another country and played at a later date.
The final winner will be awarded the AFC President's Cup trophy and 50,000 U.S. dollars, said Khieu Sameth.

The AFC President's Cup is an annual international association football competition between domestic leading clubs in Asia.

The emerging countries are eligible to enter into the AFC President Cup.
Other countries that could join the President’s Cup, but have yet to do so are Macau, Mongolia, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Afghanistan, Brunei, Timor-Leste, Laos, the Philippines and Guam.
