Cambodia receives 52 mln U.S.D loan from China for irrigation development

PHNOM PENH, May 9 (Xinhua)—Cambodia on Monday signed to receive the soft loan of 52 million U.S. dollars from the Export-Import Bank of China in order to develop Stung Sreng reservoir in western part of Cambodia.

The agreement was signed between Cambodian deputy prime minister, minister of finance Keat Chhon and visiting Zhu Hongjie, Vice President of the Export-Import Bank of China.

The water resource development project for Stung Sreng reservoir is located in three provinces—Oddar Meanchey, Siem Reap, and Banteay Meanchey, according to the press release issued after the signing ceremony.

The project includes two master-canals in the total length of 81 kilometers and 18 sub-canals with a total length of 93 kilometers, 130 bridges across canals, and water gates.

The statement added that when the construction is completed, the Stung Sreng reservoir will be capable to irrigate 25,000 hectares of rice fields in wet season and 3,750 hectares in dry season. “The project will also help supply clean water and reduce flood in the provinces.”

“The credit deal reflects the spirit of good friendship and high attention from the government of China on Cambodian government and people,” it said. “It is very important for Cambodia in economic and socio development.”
