PHNOM PENH, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia on Thursday hosted the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) Trade Exhibition in a bid to broaden trade and investment cooperation among the ACMECS countries.
The countries in the framework of ACMECS include Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar.
Cham Prasidh, Cambodia’s minister of commerce, said the ACMECS Trade Exhibition was organized following an initiative in the ACMECS Summit on Nov. 10, 2010 in Phnom Penh.
The initiative required the ACMECS member countries to hold an expo in the framework of ACMECS once a year in each country.
“Now, Cambodia is the first to hold the ACMECS Exhibition to promote trade activities among the ACMECS countries,” he said.
He said 262 companies from the ACMECS countries and other partnership countries including China, Japan, South Korea, Italy, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, England, the United States and the Philippines have displayed their products at the event.
“The expo aims at promoting trade and investment activities to boost economic development in the ACMECS countries,” he said, adding that besides the expo, there are business forums and meetings between buyers and sellers from these countries.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister Keat Chhon, minister of economy and finance, said that the expo not only gave opportunities for merchants, producers, businesspeople, and investors to seek business partners, but it also broaden cooperation in the framework of ACMECS countries.
He said the ACMECS expo was coincided with the establishment of ASEAN-China Free Trade Area.
At the opening ceremony, there were also the participation from Thai Minister of Industry Wannarat Channukul, Laos’ Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Siaosavath Savengsuksa, Vietnam’s Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry Nguyen Cam Tu, and representative of Myanmar’s Trade Ministry.
The expo was held at the Diamond Island Exhibition Center and will last until Dec. 18.
