PHNOM PENH, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Approximately 2,000 government officials, foreign diplomats, non-governmental organization representatives, trafficked victims and students on Monday gathered here to mark the National Anti-Human Trafficking Day.
The day aimed at combating human trafficking and sexual exploitation on women and children, sharing experience and knowledge relevant to human trafficking and sexual exploitation, and reminding the whole society of respecting and protecting women’s and children’s rights from sexual harassment, said the Minister of Women’s Affairs Ing Kantha Phavi.
“The celebration is the annual largest event to accelerate activities to prevent and eliminate human trafficking and every form of violence,” she told the gathering.
The minister said some main factors leading to human trafficking and domestic violence in Cambodia are gender inequality, inflows of inappropriate foreign cultures, poverty, immorality, and unemployment.
Speaking at the event, the Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Men Sam An said the country has seen significant progress in anti-human trafficking activities, but much work still needs to be done.
Meanwhile, she called for more efforts and cooperation from all authorities, development partners and national and international organizations in order to strengthen laws and to bring perpetrators for punishment.
