Cambodia exports 136,000 tons of milled rice in 10 months

PHNOM PENH, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia had exported 136,000 tons of milled rice in the first ten months of this year, an  increase of 7 percent, compared to the same period last year of 126,700 tons, according to the statistics received from the  Ministry of Commerce on Monday.
The reports showed that although the exported quantity had seen a slight increase, the revenues had gone up sharply to about  78 million U.S. dollars, up 200 percent from 26 million U.S. dollars at the same time last year.
Kong Putheara, director of the Commerce Ministry’s Statistics Department, said most of Cambodian milled rice has been  exported to European markets and the United States and some to China, South Korea and Japan.
“As floods have partly damaged rice paddies in some rice producing countries this year, I believe that the prices of rice next  year will be much better than those of this year,” he said.
Cambodia expected to export about 200,000 tons of milled rice in the whole year 2011.
The country has 3.9 million tons of rice paddies, in equivalent to 2.5 million tons of milled rice, left over for exports this year,  according to the government report.
However, this country can export only the small amount of its milled rice due to the lack of sophisticated post-harvesting  technology.
The country needs roughly 350 million U.S. dollars to invest in hi-tech post harvest technology and to purchase rice paddies  from farmers for processing in order to achieve its self-imposed target of one-million-ton rice exports by 2015.
