PHNOM PENH, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of opposition-aligned trade union activists and workers illegally rallied on a street near the capital's Freedom Park on Saturday morning, calling for higher wages and release of 21 detained protesters.
Hundreds of anti-riot police have been deployed in and around the Freedom Park and barricades have been used to cordon off the Park to prevent the activists from entering the Park.
Sam Rainsy, leader of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party, and his deputy Kem Sokha appeared at the rally for about 5 minutes to encourage those activists.
There has been no report of clash.
Pav Sina, president of the Collective Union of Movement of Workers, announced at the event that the rally was organized to demand a 160 U.S. dollars minimum wage for garment workers and the release of 21 protesters detained since January, despite a ban by the City Hall.
The opposition and its aligned trade unions have held protests since a disputed general election in July last year handed victory to Prime Minister Hun Sen's ruling party.
Two violent protests in early January left 4 protesters dead.
