PHNOM PENH, July 28 (Xinhua) -- The ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) of longtime Prime Minister Hun Sen won 68 parliamentary seats and the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party gained 55 seats in Sunday's general elections, a government spokesman said. "Preliminarily estimated results show that the CPP got 68 seats and the opposition party got 55 seats,"Khieu Kanharith, spokesman for the government and the CPP, told Xinhua over telephone Sunday night. "This is an estimate, but if it's wrong, just one or two seats only,"he said.
The opposition party's spokesman Yim Sovann could not be reached for comments for the moment.
The official results of the National Election Committee has not been made available by far.
Despite the victory, the ruling party saw a remarkable decline in the number of seats it attained. In the last elections in 2008, the party won up to 90 seats out of a total of 123 seats in parliament.
While the opposition of recently-returned leader Sam Rainsy saw a big rise in the number of seats this time from only 29 seats in the elections in 2008.
Prime Minister Hun Sen, 61, has been in power for 28 years. He will extend his power for another five years through the victory.
Some 9.67 million Cambodians were eligible to cast their ballots at 19,009 polling stations throughout the country on Sunday, according to the National Election Committee.
About 40,456 national and international observers had observed the elections.
