PHNOM PENH, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- A mortar round, leftover from wartime, exploded on Friday, killing a boy and a girl both aged 7 in northwestern Cambodian province of Battambang, a military police officer confirmed Saturday.
"The victims scratched the ground near their village and found the shell, then they used rock to smash it, triggering the explosion," said Bun Roeun, deputy military police chief of Bovel district, where the accident happened. "They died on the spot."
Landmines and unexploded ordnances killed 22 people and injured 89 others last year, according to a government report.
An estimated 4 million to 6 million landmines and unexploded ordnances left over from three decades of war and internal conflicts that ended in 1998.
The country has been seeking about 50 million U.S. dollars a year until 2020 to entirely get rid of all types of anti-personnel mines.
