Disabled Volleyball World Cup matches kick off in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, July 23 (Xinhua) -- The 2011 Volleyball World Cup competitions for disabled has kicked off here on Saturday  with the participation of disabled volleyball teams from 6 countries around the globe.
Speaking during opening the international event at the capital’s Olympic Stadium, the President of Cambodian Red Cross, Bun  Rany, the wife of Prime Minister Hun Sen, said it was the third time that Cambodia hosted the event, which was attended by  volleyball disabled athletes from Cambodia, Germany, Slovakia, Kazakhstan, Laos and Sri Lanka.
“This spectacular event is a testimony clearly highlighting that the Volleyball Disability sector has been making progress  nationally and internationally with high attention and support from the government of Cambodia and all walks of life,” she said.
“The matches also show the ability, talent and potential of persons with disability and mirror their active participation in social  activity.”
Hossam Eldin Mostafa, president of World Organization Volleyball for Disabled (WOVD), said the event has created a record —it is the only time in the history of the Standing Volleyball World Cup that one country—Cambodia—has hosted the event  three times.
“The matches are a remarkable illustration of the power of sport to bring people together from a variety of countries and  backgrounds for a common purpose,” he said. “It would create close relations among disabled in various countries.”
The event was also attended by WOVD officials from Canada, China, Australia, Egypt, Iran, South Korea, Malaysia, Slovenia,  and the United States.
The matches will run until July 29.
